Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course offers an overview of Arabic literatures from the mid-twentieth century to the present, building on the literary framework introduced in previous years. It provides the historical and social context necessary for the analysis of the authors and texts studied. Students will read, analyze, and translate selected excerpts in the original Arabic and give short oral presentations in Modern Standard Arabic on topics discussed in class. In addition to literary study, the course aims to strengthen students’ reading comprehension and translation skills through the analysis of unvocalized Arabic texts, as well as their ability to summarize and present material orally.

Course Prerequisites

Successful completion of the second-year Arabic literature course.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 36 hours of classroom teaching, including lectures, guided reading and textual analysis, and topic-specific seminars.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is based on an oral exam designed to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of the topics covered during the course. The grade is expressed on a 30-point scale.

N.B.: Each student is required to have read at least two works of their choice translated from Arabic into Italian: either two novels or one novel and an anthology of short stories or poetry. A list of recommended Arabic works available in Italian translation will be provided by the instructor during the course.
Reading materials in Arabic and further bibliographic updates will be provided in class.

Contents

The course offers a survey of Arabic “committed literature” (adab al-iltizām) from the mid-twentieth century to the present. It examines key authors and major literary currents—including postcolonial literature, opposition literature, prison writing, and exile literature—as expressions of resistance and rebellion in writing against forms of political oppression, whether colonial in origin or produced by authoritarian regimes within the region, in both past and present contexts.
