Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Understand the main production processes of ancient artefacts (ceramics, metals, glass, stone) and the concept of chaîne opératoire.

Identify and describe the principal archaeometric methods (XRF, XRD, SEM-EDS, isotopic analysis) and their applications.

Critically evaluate scientific data to reconstruct ancient technologies, production systems and trade networks.

Integrate archaeological and archaeometric approaches in the study of material culture.

Apply this knowledge to the analysis of case studies from the ancient Mediterranean.

Teaching Methods

The course combines frontal lectures on theoretical and methodological topics with practical and seminar activities. It includes exercises based on case studies, analysis of archaeological materials and discussion of scientific papers, aimed at fostering critical learning and the integration of archaeological knowledge with archaeometric skills. Visits to laboratories and, where possible, fieldwork activities are also included.

This course explores how ancient societies produced and traded artefacts (ceramics, metals, glass, stone), combining the archaeological study of techniques and production cycles with the scientific methods of archaeometry (XRF, XRD, SEM-EDS, isotopic analysis). Through case studies, students learn to reconstruct chaînes opératoires, technologies and trade networks, gaining both theoretical and practical skills for the integrated study of archaeological materials.
