Course Objectives


The trainee professional must develop a caring relationship with the individuals they interact with in educational and healthcare settings
The trainee professional must develop skills for effective communication in educational and healthcare settings
The trainee professional must develop skills for planning training programmes in educational and healthcare settings
The trainee professional must be familiar with teaching strategies to be used in educational and healthcare settings

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists of an oral examination designed to assess students’ acquired knowledge, their mastery of the course content and their ability to interpret material critically. The assessment will focus on the following criteria:
- knowledge of the syllabus (50 per cent);
- clarity, independence and coherence of presentation (10 per cent);
- use of specialist terminology (10 per cent);
- argumentative and critical thinking skills (15 per cent);
- ability to analyse and process information (15 per cent).

Grading criteria:
- 18–21: Satisfactory;
- 22–25: Fair;
- 26–28: Good;
- 29–30: Excellent.

Honours will be awarded when the student demonstrates excellent performance across the various grading criteria.

Expected learning outcomes:
1. Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of the epistemological principles of care pedagogy and didactics; knowledge of the pedagogical principles underpinning effective communication; knowledge of teaching strategies to be applied in educational and healthcare contexts; development of skills for designing a training event

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: ability to apply the principles of the pedagogy of care in teaching practice; ability to apply effective communication in educational and healthcare settings.

3. Independent judgement: ability to evaluate one’s own learning journey, identify strengths and weaknesses, develop critical thinking, and develop the ability to self-direct one’s own learning

4. Communication skills: developing social and interpersonal skills, in particular empathy, active listening and the rules of group communication

5. Learning skills: understanding the key issues of the topics, managing cognitive overload, and focusing on the fundamental points of the theories and topics covered in the programme
