Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (03/03/2027 - 30/05/2027)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. identify the main laboratory tests used at different stages of the cardiovascular patient pathway, from prevention to the perioperative period;
2. understand why specific laboratory parameters are requested in patients at cardiovascular risk, during acute events, before cardiac surgery, during CPB/ECMO, and after surgery;
3. interpret simple laboratory profiles at an introductory level by integrating multiple results and distinguishing the meaning of an isolated value from its trend over time;
4. understand the role of monitoring the complete blood count, electrolytes, kidney function, acid-base balance, lactate, hemostasis, and cardiovascular biomarkers in the main clinical scenarios covered;
5. recognize the main laboratory changes associated with hemodilution, anticoagulation, bleeding, hypoperfusion, hemolysis, and organ injury in the setting of extracorporeal circulation;
6. use appropriate scientific terminology and relate laboratory findings to the clinical context without assigning diagnostic meaning to a single isolated result.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of cell biology, general chemistry, and biochemistry.
Elementary knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, particularly the cardiovascular system, blood, kidney function, and homeostatic mechanisms.
Knowledge acquired in the Basic Clinical Pathology module provides the foundation for the applied interpretation of the main laboratory tests.
No advanced knowledge of cardiology or critical care medicine is required.

Teaching Methods

Lectures integrated with guided discussion of simple clinical-laboratory scenarios involving cardiovascular patients.
Laboratory reports, tables, and longitudinal trends are used to show how different parameters are integrated before, during, and after cardiac surgery and extracorporeal support.
The approach is introductory and oriented toward the future professional practice of cardiovascular perfusion technologists.

Assessment Methods

Assessment will consist of a written and/or oral examination covering the entire course syllabus. Grades are expressed on a 30-point scale, and the examination is passed with a score of 18/30 or higher.
Assessment will consider: knowledge and understanding of the main laboratory tests used in different cardiovascular scenarios; ability to interpret simple laboratory profiles and trends over time; ability to integrate multiple results with the clinical context; and appropriate use of scientific terminology.
Indicative grading criteria: complete, rigorous, and well-integrated answers: 30; thorough and precise: 29-27; adequate with some gaps: 26-24; fully sufficient: 23-21; minimally sufficient with evident gaps: 20-18.
