Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (07/10/2026 - 31/01/2027)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

a) To educate the student on the critical method and discussion through the description of experiments, heritage of the history of biology and genetics. b) To provide the student with a balanced and antidogmatic view of living beings, in which common morpho-functional characteristics, their interactions and complementarities are outlined, from viruses to man.

Course Prerequisites

As academic regulations

Teaching Methods

FrontaFrontal lessons (obligatory) stimulating interactivity through classroom discussion of the topics addressed.Lessons slides provided by Professor Pandolfi

Assessment Methods

the module of applied biology is composed by 15 questions. Essential requirement to pass the exam is to answer at least 50% of the questions of each single module. The vote is calculated by multiplying the number of correct answers for each individual module by two and calculating the weighted average. The questions are prepared by the teacher during the academic year of reference.The outcome of the test is evaluated as a result of learning the specific training objectives.
Students with disabilities, specific learning disorders (SLD), or other special educational needs are entitled to individualized examination arrangements in accordance with current legislation and the University's Service Charter (https://www.unich.it/sites/default/files/2024-02/carta_dei_servizi_0.pdf), subject to prior agreement with the course instructor. To request compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, students must contact the CON_TE_STO Service by following the procedure outlined in the University's Service Charter.
Students are strongly encouraged to contact the course instructor during the teaching period, or well in advance of the examination date, in order to discuss the examination procedures and the accommodations that may be provided.
For information and guidance regarding the support services available at the University, students may contact the Department's Academic Advisor for Inclusion: Dott.ssa Sara Pagotto (sara.pagotto@unich.it)

Upon a justified request from incoming students participating in international mobility programmes (e.g., Erasmus+), the oral examination may be conducted in English, subject to prior agreement with the course instructor.

Contents

The program of the Applied Biology module provides the description of:
- The organization of the cells;
- The biological macromolecules;
- The structure of biological membranes and cell-environment interactions;
- The processes of mitosis, meiosis, duration of the phases and regulation of the cell cycle;
- The general characteristics of the DNA. Describe the flow of genetic information from one cell generation to another and describe DNA replication and repair. Describe the various levels of DNA organization in the cell. To illustrate the organization of the genome and of the extracellular DNA;
- The general characteristics of the RNA, knowing how to describe the flow of information within the cell, demonstrating that it understood the mechanisms of Transcription, of the Genetic Code, of the Protein Synthesis;
- The regulation of Gene Expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes;
- Asexual and sexual reproduction.
