Abstract
Objective: To assess the efficacy a combined treatment of myofascial release (MR) and myofunctional exercises (MFE) may represent a valid treatment alliance in patients with mild OSA, reducing symptoms and the number of AHI. in patients with mild OSA versus a control group (CG),
Design: Randomised controlled trial.
Participants: Fifty-nine (N=59) patients were analysed: thirty (N=30) in the Treatment Group (TG) and twenty-nine (N=29) in the Control Group (CG).
Intervention: TG underwent combined treatment of MR and MFE for 3 weekly sessions for 4 weeks. Both groups TG and CG were advised to follow the rules of sleep hygiene.
Main Outcome Measurements: considering the reduction of daytime sleepiness measured with Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) and improvement of quality of daily life perceived (PSQI) by the patient as the primary outcome and the reduction in the number of total apneas (AHI) as the secondary outcome.
Results: The results showed an improvement, statistically significant, over time compared for ODI at T0-T2 and total hypopneas at T1-T2 and T0-T2, ESS and PSQI at T0-T1 and T0-T2, in the TG. Instead, in the CG the results underlined a constant trend of OSAHS pathology, reporting an improvement only ODI at T1-T2, a slight improvement in the number of total hypopneas at T0-T1 and at T1-T2 and an improvement only for ESS at T0-T2 not for PSQI.
Conclusion: A combined treatment of MR of respiratory muscles and MFE may represent a valid treatment alliance in patients with mild OSA, reducing symptoms and the number of sleeps apnea.
