Abstract:
«Consocialis Amor». Richard of Saint Victor and the Ontology of Love · The «century of love»: this is how the period of intense and fruitful intellectual fervour that characterised European civilisation in the 12th century is often described. Whether expressed in a secular or religious sense, love is indeed the unifying theme of the most significant cultural experiences of this period. While it has been possible to speak of an «Ovidian age» in literature, extensive reflection on love also took place in theology, marking a significant turning point in medieval thought. Against this backdrop of extensive reflection on love within 12th-century Christian thought, this essay explores Richard of Saint Victor’s De Trinitate, widely regarded as one of the most significant philosophical-theological texts of the period.
