Abstract:
The paper argues that some passages from Ecclesiazusae reflect the participa- tion of the peasant middle class in the assemblies of the late 5th–early 4th century BC. The women who follow Prassagora impersonate men who arrive at the ekklesia from the chora: seeing elements who sociologically and economically were country people arrive (who even arrived singing traditional melodies) was not something totally disconnected from a minimum connection with reality. We can infer a historical background that sees the presence in the assemblies, at the chronological level in which this comedy was conceived and staged, of the peasant population, and above all of its relevant and influential part, the middle hoplite class.
