Abstract:
Hans Jonas and Non-Ethics. For a Practical Idea of Truth. According to Hans
Jonas, traditional ethics, as it has been understood over the past two millennia,
is coming to an end. The assumptions on which normative ethics was based
have disappeared, and ethical action no longer possesses the certainty once
guaranteed by a shared conception of truth. The advent of the “technological
era” has undermined the stable relationship between truth and ethics, theory and
practice. Knowledge of truth was once decisive for action, making it possible
to establish binding moral norms. With the proliferation of new technologies,
however, this relationship is reversed: theory becomes subordinated to action
and technique. Technologies impose their own use through their “usability”,
operating independently of ethical justification and compelling ethics to adapt. In
this context, metaphysical truth itself becomes dangerous, giving rise to an ethics
of restraint grounded in uncertainty and in a “Pascalian Anti-Wager”.
