Periodontal disease is one of the major problems in dentistry nowadays causing considerable economic and healthcare drawbacks. Thus, this proposal aims to develop an Innovative, natural based, antioxidant composite membrane containing a combination of colloidal nanoparticles, anti-inflammatory natural based molecules and antioxidant spring water active principles as never been performed before to increase the oral health, mostly the host immune defenses against periodontopathogens giving breakthrough research. This objective will be pursued by three separate Work Packages. Briefly, in the WP1 the selection of the best compounds will be performed. Moreover, the evaluation of the compounds would be analyzed through a co-culture model. In addition, prebiotics against the main relevant bacteria involved in the periodontal/ peri- implant diseases will be chosen to be loaded in the membrane. Through WP2 the foundations for the realization (synthesis and characterization) of an enriched innovative hybrid scaffold membrane (with prebiotics and other molecules) will be laid. Whilst the WPS will evaluate the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant effect of the innovative hybrid membrane on a co-culture through in vitro studies applied on primary human cells. As the oral bacteria and inflammation are associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, premature birth etc this multidisciplinary proposal aims to improve not only the patients’ oral condition but also systematic one. Moreover, it should be applied also in orthopedics or other surgical fields being the INASCO transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary.
