Syllabus

Course Objectives


During the Course, doctors will learn to correctly perform a bibliographic search on PubMed Medline, and they will know text genres. They will train their reading skills, a language ability that will be useful for them to study and update on international scientific literature.

Course Prerequisites


Good knowledge of basic standard English.

Class attendance is enough for doctors to learn all the subjects and issues presented during the lessons, which are necessary to pass final examination. The professor will provide doctors with all the material and slides used during the lessons. As further support for studying, doctors can use any grammar books, as long as they have an ISBN, and the Merriam-Webster English Dictionary. Doctors can also access the Internet websites accepted by the international scientific community like PubMed Medline and its section - Medline Plus.​​​​​​​

Contents


The Course includes review and study of the linguistic issues related to scientific research. The different types of scientific journals and scientific articles are dealt with (reviews, full papers, case reports, etc.) analyzing their particular structures. Subsequently, reading and in-depth analysis of the various medical articles are undertaken, in order for students to have a relative autonomy in reading, understanding and translating the articles themselves. Finally, how to write a scientific article will be learned.
