Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of the history, themes, genres, forms, authors, texts, and contexts of the classical Chinese literary tradition. This knowledge will be imparted through both theoretical and practical approaches, making use of textbooks on Chinese history and literature, and simultaneously engaging with some of the most significant texts (with a particular emphasis on poetry) from Chinese literature produced between the first millennium BCE and the 10th century CE.
The analysis and translation of texts presented during the lessons will allow students to observe, recognize, and become familiar with the main literary genres, forms, and syntactic-grammatical structures of Classical Chinese. This familiarity will not only strengthen students’ historical and cultural knowledge of China, but also enhance their understanding of modern Chinese through constant comparison between the ancient and modern linguistic systems, thereby sharpening their translation skills.
The study of these texts will also help students acquire a repertoire of several hundred characters still present in modern Chinese, expanding their vocabulary and deepening their awareness—within a diachronic perspective—of the nuances and semantic implications of various characters. Finally, the presentation of texts in traditional (non-simplified) characters will allow students to navigate with greater confidence in linguistic and communicative contexts that continue to use such script today.

Course Prerequisites

Proficiency in the Chinese language sufficient to write characters accurately and familiarity with the Pinyin phonetic transcription system.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 36 hours of in-person lectures (equivalent to 6 CFU), divided into two weekly sessions throughout the second semester. One of the sessions is dedicated to more theoretical aspects (history of literature and history of China), while the other focuses on the analysis of selected texts, which will be presented, translated, and commented on in class by the instructor. All texts will be in traditional (non-simplified) Chinese characters.
Attendance is not mandatory but highly recommended. Non-attending students are required to arrange their exam syllabus with the instructor during office hours, by the end of the course.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral interview covering the topics addressed during the course. It is divided into two parts: the first includes 4–5 questions aimed at assessing the student’s acquisition of the theoretical knowledge (Chinese literary history and its historical-cultural context) provided during the course; the second involves the reading, translation, and commentary of selected texts presented during the lessons.
The final grade, expressed out of thirty, will be calculated as the average of the grades obtained in the two respective parts. A passing grade will be awarded if the student demonstrates a basic knowledge of the topics covered and the texts studied during the course; a top grade will be awarded if the student shows an in-depth understanding of the material and the ability to critically engage with it.
