Course Objectives


In line with the educational objectives of the Degree in Language and foreign literature , the aim of the course is to examine the most recent developments in the theoretical and practical debate on translation and to acquire linguistic competence - also with respect to mediation - at a fully autonomous level (B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference).

RESULTS OF APPROACH ATTENTION: The course aims to provide theoretical and methodological tools useful for the profession of translator in different fields, and to acquire both oral and written translation skills, from and into French.

KNOWLEDGE AND CAPACITY OF COMPREHENSION: knowledge and application of the main translation approaches applied to the various types of text. The aim of the course will be to consolidate and deepen the language skills both written and oral, also with reference to the interpretation of negotiations.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION: analyse translations according to the type of test and the different language registers;

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: to reflect critically on the different approaches to translation and on the regulatory mechanisms that govern the standard and non-standard language.

COMMUNICATION ABILITIES: to be able to describe the main translation approaches and apply them to the different types of text being analyzed, to consolidate the skills of understanding, production and oral interaction.

Course Prerequisites


The course is aimed at students who have acquired, both in writing and in speaking, a thorough knowledge of the grammatical, morphosyntactic and lexical structures of the French language at level B2. The language exam III can be undertook only after passing the French language and translation exam II.

Teaching Methods


The teaching is carried out through frontal lessons using paper, audiovisual and multimedia material. The different theories of translation will be discussed, deepened and compared, from the most classical approaches to the most current ones.
The methods applied, compared to the French mediation module, will be based on the most recent reflections on the teaching/learning of dialogical interpretation. The course will be supplemented by exercises held by CLA

Assessment Methods


In order to prove the learning process, the student must pass a written and oral exam:
Written test: dictation and two translations of passages of different types: (journalistic, topical, literary), from and into French - evaluation in thirtieths)
Only the monolingual dictionary may be used for the two translations.

Oral test: evaluation in thirtieths:
The oral interview is aimed at assessing the language level of competence acquired. Subjects of the interview:
- Conversation on a topical issue proposed by the committee
Reflections on language
Reflections on the translation theory.

The course is divided into 2 modules:
Language and translation (4CFU): The course will focus on the study of the French language, both oral and written, and aims to make the student acquire a level of competence at level B2+ of the Common European Framework. The progressive and systematic study of the normative mechanisms that regulate the language in its various components, will provide the tools for the acquisition of a correct and conscious use of written and oral French.
The module on translation aims to consolidate and refine translation techniques both from a theoretical and methodological point of view and from the point of view of contrasting Italian-French/French-Italian analysis.
The body of texts subject to analysis and translation will concern journalistic (newspaper or weekly articles), advertising (slogans and microtexts) and literary texts with reference to novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
