Contents

This course explores the linguistic history of the German-speaking world from the Middle Ages to the present. Emphasis is placed on the geographical diversity of German and its adaptability through continuous contact with other languages, particularly Latin, French, and English. By tracing the evolution of German as a pluricentric language at the center of Europe, students will examine the development of its morphology, syntax, orthography, and other features over the centuries, culminating in its present form. Special attention will be given to the concept of pluricentricity (differences among standard varieties of German across the German-speaking area) and to contemporary reflections on literary language.
