Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course offers an overview of Arabic literatures from the mid-twentieth century to the present, continuing work done in previous years. It introduces the historical and social context needed to understand authors and texts studied. Students will read, analyze, and translate texts in the original language, and give short oral presentations in Modern Standard Arabic. In addition to literary study, the course helps students improve their reading comprehension and translation skills through unvocalized Arabic texts, and develop clear oral summary and presentation skills.

Course Prerequisites

Successful completion of the second-year Arabic literature course.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 36 hours of classroom teaching, including lectures and topic-specific seminars.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is based on an oral exam that checks students’ knowledge of the course topics. The grade is given on a 30-point scale.

Texts

F. M. Corrao, M. Ruocco (a cura di), La letteratura araba. Dalla Nahda alle rivoluzioni e oltre, Milano, Mondadori, 2024, dalla Parte seconda (p. 159) in poi.
For further reading and study:
- Y. Albers, G. Khalil, F Pannewick (ed.), "Commitment and Beyond: Reflections on/of the Political in Arabic Literature since the 1940s", Dr Ludwig Reichert Verlag, 2015.
- I. Camera d'Afflitto, Letteratura araba contemporanea dalla nahḍah a oggi, Carocci Editore, Nuova Edizione, Roma 2020.
N.B.: Each student is required to have read at least 2 novels (or one novel and a short-story or poetry anthology) of their choice, translated from Arabic into Italian. A list of recommended Arabic works available in Italian translation will be provided by the teacher during the course.
Reading materials in Arabic and further bibliographic updates will be provided in class.

Contents

The course offers a survey of Arabic “committed literature” (adab al-iltizām) from the mid-twentieth century to the present. It examines key authors and major literary currents—including postcolonial literature, literature of opposition, prison writing, and exile literature—understood as expressions of a writing of resistance and rebellion against forms of political oppression, whether colonial in origin or produced by authoritarian regimes within the region, in both past and present contexts.
