Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course is aimed at achieving an intermediate-advanced level of linguistic competence. It aims to develop in the student an adequate mastery of the linguistic system and capacity for analysis, supported by an in-depth study of morphosyntactic structures in both oral and written language. In particular, it tends to develop the ability to understand/produce texts in different functional styles: regulatory, descriptive and narrative, as well as the initiation into the understanding/production of argumentative text. Techniques of translation from Russian into Italian of original informative texts of medium complexity on current cultural, social and economic topics of Russian-speaking reality will also be developed. The knowledge and skills acquired in the second year of the course in the field of liaison interpreting will be consolidated.

Course Prerequisites

The achievement of the second-year linguistic skills.

Teaching Methods

The course involves the use of an integrated method: communicative approach, group work, grammar description prior to students' autonomous preparation of new content, fixation, consolidation, and translation activities. Multimedia aids (computer screenings, films, audio recordings) and authentic materials (magazines and publications in the language) will be used throughout the year.

The course consists of 325 hours, divided as follows: 78 hours of lectures with the teacher + 247 hours of self-learning and homework + 70 hours of practice with the CEL.

The course consists of the following parts, to which attention will be devoted throughout the academic year: Lexicon and morphosyntax according to the syllabus; Comprehension and production of written text; Comprehension and production of oral text; Written translation from and into Russian; Specialised language of business communication.

Assessment Methods

The exam relating to the content introduced by the teacher and the CEL lessons takes place jointly and consists of a written test and an oral tesst.

For attending students, there are 4 (2 for L11) ongoing tests throughout the year:

- guided composition in Russian with bilingual dictionary;

- grammar test including RU-IT translation of simple and complex sentences without a dictionary to test knowledge of the course morphosyntax;

- RU-IT translation of an informative text of approx. 800 characters including spaces, with the possibility of using the bilingual dictionary (L12 only);

- oral Russian-Italian language mediation test (L12 only).

Passing the ongoing tests allows direct admission to the oral exam.

The oral exam consists of:

- reading and sight translation of passages in Russian with logical analysis of the complex period;

- explanation in Italian of a morphosyntax topic (also for native Russian students);

- conversation on topics related to the readings proposed during the year (narrative and historical-cultural texts) and on a text prepared independently;

- interpretation of a bilingual commercial dialogue (L12 only);

- conversation on the topics introduced by the CEL during the exercises.

For those who have not passed the ongoing tests, for non-attending students and for out-of-course students, there is a final written and an oral test of the same type.

The passed written exam/ongoing test is valid for three sessions. The student may choose to take the oral exam in the same session as the written exam, or in one of the two following sessions.

The written exam/ongoing test is deemed to have been passed if a pass mark is achieved in all the parts of which it is composed. In the event that only one of the parts is insufficient, it may be taken again at the first available examination session. If two or more parts are insufficient, the entire written exam must be taken again.

Assessment

The exam, both written and oral, is graded in thirtieths by averaging the marks obtained in the two parts.

Contents

The course includes the completion of the morphosyntax programme, as well as the application of morphological-syntactic analysis to authentic and contemporary texts. The teaching aims to deepen the syntactic structures of the simple proposition and the period and their synonymy, together with the refinement of some aspects of morphology and verbal and adjective syntax. Written translation techniques from Russian into Italian of non-fiction texts and from Italian into Russian of short texts containing the studied syntactic structures will be covered. Written production skills in Russian will also be developed with due lexical enrichment and paying attention to the stylistic aspects of the language. Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of skills necessary for the language mediator: exercises in speech analysis, synthesis and reformulation, concentration exercises, selective listening and memorisation, sight translation exercises.
