Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student must have a solid theoretical and practical basis for understanding the main molecular methodologies used in research and diagnostics.
Thanks to practical activities, the student will be able to acquire a good command of the most common laboratory techniques used for this purpose. The acquisition of the ability to systematically record data and procedures and to critically evaluate the experimental results obtained is also considered a training objective.
The trainee is included in the normal functioning of the Section with the learning of notions relating to safety at work and the possible dangers (biological and otherwise) associated with attending molecular biology and immunology laboratories, as well as general information relating to facilities and equipment.

LEARNING RESULTS (DUBLIN DESCRIPTORS)
Students will learn the skills necessary to develop important tests in research and diagnostics.
At the end of the course, the student will have to know the theoretical and practical principles to begin working successfully in a laboratory where molecular biological techniques are used. He will also be able to understand in detail the techniques used and apply them appropriately.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology is required.

Teaching Methods

Frontal and laboratory lessons. The student will be involved in actively participating in the discussion to improve their critical skills, re-elaborating the concepts acquired and communicating the concepts appropriately.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam, notebook of laboratory activities.

Texts

Notes provided by the teacher.

Contents

Planning an experiment (choice of protocol and reagents); compilation of a laboratory notebook; techniques for extraction and manipulation of nucleic acids and proteins; characterization of gene expression; analysis of results and presentation of data.
