Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student must know the main types of diagnostic cytopathology tests, be able to prepare and color cytological preparations, know the fundamental principles of reactive and neoplastic cellular pathology. In addition, he/she must know the main special techniques applied in cytopathology.

Contents

Indications for cytological examination: advantages and limitations. The different types of cytological examination: exfoliative, needle aspiration and impression cytology. Preparation of cytological preparations: smear, thin layer, cell block, cytocentrifugation. Fixation and histochemical staining of cytological preparations. Application of special immunocytochemical techniques and FISH in cytological diagnostics. Evaluation of the morphological characteristics of cells: normal cells, hyperplastic cells, atypical cells. Diagnostic cytopathology of the lung. Diagnostic cytopathology of the female genital system: PAP test and breast cytology. Diagnostic cytopathology of the urinary tract. Diagnostic cytopathology of effusions. Single cell sequencing technique. Sample preparation, single cell isolation techniques.
