Syllabus

Course Objectives


The Course is meant to contribute to reaching the learning and professional objectives of the programme.
In particular, it aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of Mediaeval and Humanistic Latin. Students will achieve skills in reading written sources produced during the Middle Ages and Humanism. - Expected learning results: 1) knowledge of the Course subjects (text analysis, commentary); 2) ability to critically discuss specific case-studies; autonomy in analysing texts; 3) communication skills (ability in using specifical language of each discipline; clarity in communicating contents).

No mandatory prerequisites required.

Teaching Methods


The Course consists of lectures (6 CFU = 42 hours; 9 CFU = 63 hours, divided into 3 lessons per week; each lesson will take 2 hours). Students will be tested to assess their learning. Slides will be shown in order to support learning.

Assessment Methods


The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess the students’ skills and in particular their understanding of the issues discussed during the Course, their knowledge of the bibliography in the reading list, the correct command of the specific language as well as of critical and methodological abilities.
The grading scale ranges from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

6 CFU
The course will focus on Richard of Bury's 'Philobiblon', a Latin prose text from the 14th century. It will involve reading the text (the Italian translation is provided in the bibliography) with commentary, aimed at illustrating the content from a linguistic perspective but primarily from a historical and cultural viewpoint.
9 CFU
In addition to everything outlined for the 6 CFU curriculum, those enrolled for the full 9 CFU must also study the chapter in Petrarch’s De remediis concerning the accumulation of books (Rem. I 43), whose text and translation will be analysed by the teacher.
