Course Objectives


LEARNINGS OBJECTIVES The aim of the course is to provide students a thorough understanding of the financial system and its role in the economy, its organizational structures, and the main financial products supplied. The following main topics are covered: • financial markets, and their different branches i.e. the bond, stock and derivatives markets; • management of the financial intermediaries. By the end of this course, the student will have become familiar with the analytical and theoretical instruments needed for understanding how the financial system operates as a whole and the different activities carried out by market participants. In addition, the student can be expected understanding the nature and the characteristics of bank contracts; the technical aspects of the process of sourcing funding, with a distinction made between retail and wholesale funding; the means for evaluating the creditworthiness of bank customers, and therefore, the technical aspects of financing transactions; and the array of banking services offered to customers, considering the growing importance that such services have taken on in banking in recent years. LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course the students will be able to: - identify the main issues emerging from the evolution of the financial system (knowledge and understanding); - apply the essential analysis tools to give an expert account (knowledge and skills) of understanding applied); - develop an autonomous speech on the theme of the structural and functional dimension of the financial system and of the conduct of the main actors (autonomy of judgment); - leverage the different transversal skills developed, to activate knowledge acquired in professional contexts and for different purposes (communication skills and of different nature).

Course Prerequisites


The exam does not provide any prerequisite.

Teaching Methods


The Teaching is structured in 72 hours of frontal teaching, which provide a strong interactive component between teacher and students. Frontal teaching consists of theoretical lessons and seminars held by experts of the sector on the topics covered. During the teaching some exercises are offered to the students verify the practical application of the topics viewed at the theoretical level. The frequency is optional, recommended, and the final exam will be the same for attending and non-attending students.

Assessment Methods


The exam includes a written test through theoretical and application quizzes (partial written tests are provided for attending students). The tests will be based on the reference texts indicated. The duration of the written test is 1 hour and 30 minutes. The oral examination is obligatory. The written test will be evaluated with a score between 0 and 30. Students who have passed the written test will be able to take the oral exam.

Contents


The course aims to provide a general framework for the financial system: markets, intermediaries and financial instruments; In particular: - Explain the functions of the financial system in the real economy: concepts of savings, investments, financial balances, mechanisms of production and circulation of means of payment; conduct of monetary policy. Examine the fundamental characteristics of the main financial markets and of the instruments that are traded; of the large categories of financial institutions and their management models. Deepen the rules that govern the operation of the financial system. Develop a wide range of practical applications that help to understand the approach of financial sector operators, create sensitivity and critical capacity to interpret and evaluate the major changes affecting financial systems.
