Syllabus

Course Objectives


Provide theoretical and practical knowledge on the materials used in dentistry for the fabrication of different restorations.

Expected outcomes:

The course aims to raise awareness regarding the application of maintenance techniques in relation to the potential damage they may cause to restorations present in the patient’s oral cavity.

Dublin Descriptor 1: Knowledge and Understanding

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:


recognize the dental materials used in restorations and understand the theories, principles, and practices of dental hygiene.


Dublin Descriptor 2: Applying Knowledge and Understanding

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:


apply the acquired knowledge to solve problems and perform professional tasks related to dental hygiene and prevention.


Dublin Descriptor 3: Making Judgements

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:


collect and evaluate data, hypotheses, or clinical scenarios, and formulate judgements even based on limited, incomplete, or complex information.


Dublin Descriptor 4: Communication Skills

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:


effectively communicate knowledge, information, problems, and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences and in different contexts.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:


learn independently, stay updated, and address new or even complex topics or problems.

Course Prerequisites


Basic knowledge related to (general) materials science

Teaching Methods


Lectures aimed at stimulating in students a critical understanding of the topics, enabling them to acquire knowledge of dental materials useful for solving the specific professional problems of dental hygienists.

Assessment Methods


Oral examination aimed at assessing the quality and level of knowledge and understanding of the course content, as well as the ability to apply the acquired knowledge to professional practice. The evaluation will also consider the quality of the student's participation in lessons.

The exam result is expressed out of thirty, according to an ascending scale based on the demonstration of knowledge, appropriateness of language, and logical coherence of the exposition:

sufficient but incomplete basic knowledge: score 18–22/30;

fair knowledge and clear exposition: score 23–25/30;

good knowledge and ability to explain the topics with appropriate language and mastery of the subject: score 26–28/30;

excellent knowledge of the topics and excellent exposition skills, with critical reasoning: score 28–30/30.

Honors are awarded to students who demonstrate particularly in-depth knowledge, exceptional exposition skills, and strong critical reasoning.
