Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (01/10/2025 - 31/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the student with more advanced knowledge on the structure and reactivity of organic compounds, with particular regard to the most modern synthetic strategies. Topics such as supramolecular chemistry, organic reactions catalyzed by transition metals, phase transfer catalysis and other topics that have been particularly researched in recent years are addressed. The ability to deal with problems related to the design and synthesis of organic compounds is stimulated and developed

Course Prerequisites

Students must have acquired the skills covered by the Organic Chemistry I course, for which he must have passed the exam. They must be familiar with the functional groups, the mechanisms of reactions such as nucleophilic and electrophilic substitutions, electrophilic and nucleophilic additions, the concepts of stereochemistry (enantiomers, diastereomers, mesoforms) and acid-base equilibria.

Teaching Methods

The course is divided into theoretical lessons (64 hours) and exercises (12 hours) Each theoretical topic will be completed by exercises in the classroom. The exercises will in part be carried out on the blackboard by the teacher, in part they will require the active participation of the students

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test.
The written test, lasting 120 minutes, includes 6 exercises (at least 1 exercise concerning pericyclic reactions). Each answer is worth up to 5 points, for a maximum total score of 30. If the score is 18 or higher, the exam continues, and the student is admitted to the oral test. It is important to note that the oral test is not intended to improve the grade obtained in the written test; rather, in the event of a negative outcome, the final grade may be lowered, potentially resulting in failure.
During the exam, consulting books, notes, or any electronic devices is not permitted.
During the course, two mid-term tests are scheduled, each consisting of six open-ended exercises covering both modules (BASE II and PERICYCLIC REACTIONS). Each test lasts two hours. Students who pass both mid-term tests will be admitted directly to the oral exam. Participation in the mid-term tests is restricted to attending students. Each assessment lasts two hours. Students who pass both midterms are exempt from the final exam. Participation in the midterm assessments is reserved for regularly attending students.
