Syllabus

Course Objectives

LEARNING OBJECTIVESThe course aims to provide students with a solid foundation in the characteristics, therapeutic applications, and main challenges associated with the use of biotechnological drugs.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of these agents, as well as their toxicity profiles. A specific focus will be dedicated to interindividual variability in drug response, with in-depth exploration of pharmacogenetics and gender-based pharmacology. The course will also address the regulatory, ethical, and economic aspects underpinning the development, approval, and clinical use of these medications.

Course Prerequisites

As required by the course.

Teaching Methods

The course will be delivered through both traditional lectures and interactive sessions, during which the processes related to the production and use of biotechnological drugs will be described and discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on the pharmacological properties of the main classes of biopharmaceuticals. In-depth analyses will be conducted on specific features characterizing selected biotechnological drugs.

Assessment Methods

EVALUATION METHODThe achievement of the course objectives will be assessed through an oral examination. By means of questions covering the various topics discussed during the course, the exam will evaluate whether the student has attained an adequate level of knowledge and understanding of the course content, as well as the ability to apply the acquired knowledge through connections between different topics, including within a multidisciplinary context. The student's performance will be considered satisfactory if they demonstrate a solid understanding of the core aspects of each topic covered and are able to apply this understanding in the discussion of the issues addressed during the oral examination. The oral exam will also assess the student's ability to use appropriate terminology and language in presenting course-related topics, with the aim of enhancing their communication skills.
Grading: The final grade will be expressed on a scale of thirty (out of 30).

Texts

Farmaci biotecnologici _ aspetti farmacologici e clinici di Elisabetta Vegeto, Adriana Maggi, Paola Minghetti
Casa Editrice Ambrosiana.
Any additional materials will be made available by the teacher to supplement the recommended text.

Contents

The course aims to provide a solid theoretical and scientific foundation on biotechnological drugs and innovative therapies, with an in-depth exploration of their molecular, pharmacological, clinical, and regulatory underpinnings.
The course content is structured around four main thematic areas: i) Technologies underpinning the development of biotechnological drugs – including genetic engineering applied to pharmacology, the production and use of protein-based drugs, monoclonal antibodies and antibody-derived products, therapeutic oligonucleotides, advanced cell therapies, and tumor-agnostic drugs;ii) Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic aspects – focusing on the distinctive characteristics of biotechnological drugs, with particular emphasis on interindividual variability associated with pharmacogenetics, pharmacogenomics, and gender-based pharmacology;iii) Therapeutic applications – clinical use of biopharmaceuticals in oncology, immunology, and vaccines;iv) Safety, regulation, and sustainability – covering the assessment of adverse effects, regulatory and ethical aspects of clinical trials involving biotechnological drugs, as well as pharmacoeconomic considerations and pharmacovigilance.
