Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide foundational knowledge of the etiopathogenetic mechanisms underlying human diseases. Specifically, the course is designed to equip students with an understanding of: a) exogenous and endogenous causes of cellular and tissue damage; b) the response mechanisms to harmful agents, including inflammatory and immune responses c) alterations in molecular, genomic, and cellular mechanisms that lead to neoplastic transformation (carcinogenesis), and tumor classification;; e) knowledge of the main types of cell therapies (stem cells and CAR-T) f) a solid understanding of medical and scientific terminology.

Course Prerequisites

To successfully follow the course, students are expected to have prior knowledge of genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, and a solid understanding of physiology and anatomy. Basic concepts of anatomy, physiology, and biology are revisited during the General Pathology lectures, where appropriate, in order to support a clearer understanding of the course topics.

Teaching Methods

The 5 credits assigned to the course are delivered through 40 hours of in-class lectures. Teaching is supported by PowerPoint presentations, which are made available to students.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment is based on an oral examination, during which students are asked questions on multiple topics selected from the detailed course syllabus. The evaluation is based on the depth of knowledge demonstrated in the answers, with particular reference to the expected learning outcomes. The grade, expressed on a 30-point scale, is assigned according to the level of knowledge, understanding, and clarity of presentation achieved by the student.
