Syllabus

Course Objectives


At the end of the course the expected learning outcomes are:
• knowledge of the specific vocabulary of the history of art criticism in its evolution over time
• Knowledge of the historical links that have enabled the fundamental developments of the discipline and their protagonists
• Knowledge of the fundamental authors of texts in the history of criticism and the analytical and scholarly movements to which they refer
• Competence in the analysis of critical texts and ability to place them in the broader framework of global cultural history
• Basic skills to conduct research on specialized bibliography and to critically rework its contents.

Course Prerequisites


No mandatory prerequisites are required; however, a strong knowledge of medieval and modern art history is strongly recommended.

Teaching Methods


Lectures and at least one weekly workshop session with guided reading of the authors’ texts and discussion. On a voluntary basis, students will be offered the opportunity to write a short paper on topics of their choice. A study visit is planned.

Assessment Methods


Oral examination and an in-course assessment (on a voluntary basis).

Bibliography for students attending the course is listed above.
The texts for in-class readings, as well as any bibliography not held by the University Library, will be provided on Moodle.

Contents


The course, through a selection of authors and texts, outlines the fundamentals of art criticism from the fifteenth century to its establishment as a discipline in the eighteenth century, and through its developments in the contemporary era.
