Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course is aimed at explaining the general characteristics and issues of postclassical archaeology concerning the Middle Ages, from the crucial passage between Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages to the emergence of the late medieval society, providing the basic tools for understanding the major archaeological sources useful for reconstructing the medieval society. At the end of the course students will acquire the basic knowledge for studying more analytically some specific themes to be explored in depth.

Course Prerequisites


No precondition needed, but it is advisable to have at least a concise knowledge of previous historical periods.

Teaching Methods

The course is structured in two educational modules: a general part (6CFU) and an in-depth analysis (3CFU). Both modules include: frontal lessons, visits to archaeological areas and museums, conferences and workshops on specific aspects of this discipline.

Assessment Methods

The examination is based on an interview where students are expected to expound critically the issues addressed during the course.
Oral exam with marks out of 30, aimed at verifying the ability to expose the arguments presented during the course with clarity and autonomy of judgment.

Lesson attendance is highly recommended. In case of justified and documented inability to attend the course, the syllabus should be agreed upon with the course professor.
