Course Objectives

LEARNING OBJECTIVES The teaching contributes to the learning objectives of the Course in Letters by supplying the basic skills for Greek history through the reading of Greek and Latin historiographic sources, with view to future employment in the field of publishing, archiving in institutions and enterprises, advertising/business communications or editorial work. Not to mention further study in the field of the humanities. Skills: knowledge of the main dynamics of the political, social and economic history of the classical Greek world and their chronological contexts. Self assessment: students must manifest the ability to critically and comparatively analyse the contents of the sources and their genesis. Communicative skills: in historical and critical framing, the student must demonstrate versatility in supplying clear and exhaustive communication.

There are no prerequisites.

Teaching Methods


The course consists of 48h of frontal teaching (INSTITUTIONAL MODULE) and 24h of frontal teaching (FURTHER STUDY MODULE). Lectures, exercises, and seminars by Italian and foreign specialists.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess students' skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, a correct command of the specific language as well as critical and methodological abilities will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

Contents

Institutional module (6 ECTS): 1) Greek history from the Mycenaean age to the Roman conquest. (3 ECTS): 2) The debate on the condition of women in ancient Greece.

- For the purposes of the exam, both for attending and non-attending students, knowledge (translation and commentary) of the ancient testimonies discussed during the course is required first. The relevant material is contained in the texts adopted for the exam; any additional material will be downloadable, at the end of the course, from the University website. - It should be noted that the ability to translate sources from Greek and Latin is mandatory for students enrolled in the classical curriculum, and is considered optional for the modern curriculum. - The reference texts listed above constitute the exam program for both attending and non-attending students. - Attendance is recommended. - There are no alternative programs for non-attending students. - Student reception: Tuesday from 14 to 16; Thursday 14-16. -Erasmus incoming students are welcome. They can take the exam in English and have, on request, guidance services and tutorship in English. The texts are as follows: - P.J. Rhodes, A History of the Classical Greek World 478-322 BC, Oxford, Blackwell 2006. - S. B. Pomeroy, Spartan Women, Oxford University Press 2002.
