Syllabus

Course Objectives


The aim of the Course is to develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of mental pathology and to transmit a relational method useful in psychodiagnostic practice, as well as in the clinical and psychotherapeutic encounter. Additionally, the course aims to provide knowledge of the psychopathology that characterizes childhood and adolescence, with particular attention to the psychodynamic perspective.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The Course will provide students with updated knowledge to answer the following questions:
- What are the principal abnormal phenomena that characterise a mental pathology?
- How do persons with schizophrenia live time, space, Others, one’s own Self and one’s own body?
- How do persons with melancholia live time, space, Others, one’s own Self and one’s own body?
- How do persons with mania live time, space, Others, one’s own Self and one’s own body?
Furthermore, by the end of the course, the student will have an in-depth understanding of the main psychopathological conditions that arise during childhood and adolescence.

Teaching Methods


Lectures with extensive documentation of clinical cases provided by the instructor. Attendance is not mandatory but highly recommended.

Assessment Methods


The first two appeals after the conclusion of the course will be written (multiple choice questions). The subsequent appeals will be oral.
The exam consists of a multiple-choice written test (30 questions), with 1 point awarded for each correct answer. The test duration is 35 minutes.
The final score will range from 0 to 30. A score between 18 and 23 indicates a sufficient level of learning; a score between 23 and 28 indicates a good level of learning; a score between 28 and 30 indicates an excellent level of learning. The grade "cum laude" (with honors) reflects outstanding analytical and critical thinking skills regarding the course topics and may be awarded following an optional oral examination at the student’s discretion.

- Descriptive, clinical and structural psychopathologies
- The “toolbox”: epoché, empatic, eidetic and dialectic understanding
- Description of the main phenomena that characterise a clinical picture: disorders of consciousness, thought disorders, affective disorders.
- Psychopathological knoweldge as the basis for psychotherapy
- The lived world of hysteric, phobic, obsessive, melancholic, manic, borderline, toxicomanic, paranoic, narcissistic, affected by feeding and eating disorders and schizophrenic persons
- Main psychopathological conditions related to developmental age
