Course Objectives

This course aims at providing students with a specific and comprehensive knowledge of the issues, topics, and problems that characterize a European are more "imagined" than real.

Course Prerequisites

The skill that can be expected from students with a first level laurea degree.

Teaching Methods

Regular lessons, class presentations.

Assessment Methods

The final oral exam will assess the student's acquisition of the basic notions and issues of the course. The student's ability to contextualize and critically discuss the materials will also be assessed. The grading scale is from 1 to 30, and the exam will be evaluated on the basis of the the correctness and completeness of the answers with respect to the indicated criteria. An excellent score ((27-30) will be given to students who show an in-depth knowledge of the course contents, are able to contextualize their knowledge and critically discuss it. A good score (22-26) will be given to students who know the course contents and are able to establsih links among them; a sufficient score (18-21) will be given to students able to present the main contents of the course. An insufficient score will be given to students who do not know the basic notions and topics of the course.

The discourse on the Balkans, or Balkanism, is not only the trigger of various nationalistic movements, but can also be read as a foil of Europe's other face. By analysing and discussing key texts of Bosnian, Croatian, snd Serbian of the twentieth century, we will compare and contrast on the one hand the European imaginary about the Balkans, while, on the other, the Balkan's own self-image. We will see how vey often the image that Europe has of the Balkans is that of a fantasmagoric, feared, or idealized reality, which is hardly ever a realistic one.
