Course Objectives


LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The course aims to provide advanced knowledge of the literary movement “Russian Sentimentalism” by structural analysis of literary texts in the contest of the Russian culture of the end of the 18th-Century - beginning of 19-th-Century.
The aims of the course include:
- building on learners's advanced knowledge and understanding of the culture and literature of Russia.
- enhancing learners' understanding of Russian sentimentalist lyrics, dramas, prose works.
- developing an intercultural perspective of studying cultural phenomena.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Knowledge:
− The student has a good knowledge of the history of the Russian literature of the end of the 18th-Century - beginning of 19-th-Century.
− The student presents literary works of the period, and puts them into a larger historical, cultural and literary context.
- The student has a good knowledge of the most important Russian literary works of the end of the 18th-Century - beginning of 19-th-Century.
Skills:
− The student uses advanced literature terminology in Italian and in Russian.
− The student possesses abilities in the analysis and interpretation of the literary works.

Course Prerequisites


Level B2 of Russian.

Teaching Methods


COURSE STRUCTUREThe course is structured in an amount of 54 class hours. It consists in classes of history of literature and literary criticism, and in analysis of the most important literary works of N. Karamzin. Multimedia resource material is used in support of the lectures.

Assessment Methods


COURSE GRADE DETERMINATION
End-of-semester assessment consists in an oral examination about the course topics.

LITERARY WORKS:
The course includes the following works of N. M. Karamzin: a selection of poems; povesti Bednaja Liza, Natal’ja, bojarskaja doč’; Pis’ma russkogo putešestvennika, (izd. podgotovili Ju.M.Lotman, N.A.Marchenko, B.A.Uspenskij), Leningrad,1984. Authors to be studied include A.N. Radiščev, whose Putešestvie iz Peterburga v Moskvu is in part inspired by Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey such as Karamzin’s Pis’ma russkogo putešestvennika.

Hammarberg, From the idyll to the novel: Karamzin’s sentimentalist prose, Cambridge-New York: Cambridge University Press, 1991; N.D. Kočetkova, Literatura russkogo sentimentalizma, Sankt-Peterburg, Nauka, 1994; Nikolaï Karamzin, Les Lettres d’un voyageur russe, édition traduite, commentée et présentée par Rodolphe Baudin, Paris, Institut d’Études slaves – L’Inventaire, 2022.
