Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at presenting a general overview of text linguistics, providing the necessary tools for the analysis and production of written texts, and offering a discussion on lexicon and semantics. At the end of the course, the student will have learned the main theoretical tools for the scientific study of texts, will be able to apply them to the analysis of different text types and will have acquired the required competences for the production of argumentative texts of academic level.

Course Prerequisites

It would be preferable to have attended at least one course in general linguistics.

Assessment Methods

The oral examination assesses the notions acquired, the ability to link them together, competences, capacity for argumentation, relevance and completeness of answers, language property, and the correct use of the technical language of the discipline. The final assessment will also take into account the papers written by the student during the course.

Contents

The course consists of two parts that will run in parallel. In the first, theoretical part, the fundamentals of text linguistics will be presented and the main theoretical tools for analysing texts will be provided, with particular reference to written texts. Semantics and lexicon will be given a closer focus. In the second part of the course, which is applicative in nature and involves the active participation of students, the focus will be on the linguistic analysis of academic texts, especially in Italian, and students will be required to produce academic texts independently, which will be part of the final exam.
