Course Objectives


The course aims to provide a historical and geographical overview of Semitic languages, focusing on the shared phonological, morphological, and syntactic structures from a comparative approach, while emphasising both their conservative and innovative features.

Course Prerequisites


A basic knowledge of at least one Semitic language (e.g., Arabic) is recommended, but not required.

Teaching Methods


Lectures with the use of multimedia supports and resources. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in the lessons.

Assessment Methods


The final exam consists of an oral examination aimed at verifying the learning and understanding of the topics included in the program. The grade is based on a 30-point scale.

G. Garbini e O. Durand, Introduzione alle lingue semitiche, Brescia: Paideia edizioni, 1994 (Studi sul Vicino Oriente Antico, 2).
Additional bibliography will be recommended by the teacher during the lectures.

Contents


The course will offer a historical-comparative overview of the Semitic languages through a perspective that combines typological, synchronic, and diachronic approaches.
