Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to develop the ability to understand texts in a foreign language by strengthening the identification of main and supporting ideas, the use of inferential strategies, and critical reading skills. Students gain greater autonomy in interpreting different types of texts, improve their handling of advanced vocabulary, and refine their ability to recognize the structure, cohesion, and register of written discourse.

Course Prerequisites

Students are expected to have already acquired, during their first year, a solid basic linguistic competence in the foreign language studied, including intermediate-level reading skills, knowledge of key grammatical structures, and familiarity with high-frequency vocabulary.

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures supported by practical activities involving reading and guided text analysis. Individual and group exercises, class discussions, annotation and summarizing tasks are incorporated, along with sessions dedicated to developing advanced comprehension strategies. Working with authentic materials and engaging in collective discussion aim to promote active learning and foster greater interpretative autonomy.

Assessment Methods

Assessment consists of a written exam and an oral exam. The written component includes exercises in the comprehension and analysis of authentic texts, aimed at evaluating the ability to identify main and supporting information, make inferences, recognize argumentative structure, and understand lexical usage. The oral exam focuses on the critical discussion of selected chapters from The Politics of English: Conflict, Competition, Co-existence by Philip Seargeant, and is designed to assess students’ mastery of the content, their ability to make connections between the topics covered, and their skill in presenting analyses and interpretations clearly and coherently.

Texts

The reference texts for the course include the teaching materials provided and used during the lessons. For the oral part of the exam, students are also required to study The Politics of English: Conflict, Competition, Co-existence by Philip Seargeant, which serves as the starting point for discussion and further exploration of the topics covered in the course.

Contents

The course includes the reading and analysis of various types of texts, such as academic and scientific articles, in-depth journalistic pieces, narrative and literary excerpts, as well as technical and informational texts such as reports, short essays, and professional documents. Students work with a wide range of materials in order to become familiar with different structures, registers, and communicative functions.

More information

Some of the texts selected and used during the course will focus on themes related to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In particular, materials will be provided that address issues such as the reduction of poverty and inequality, access to quality education, the promotion of health and well-being, and environmental sustainability—from the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems to climate action—as well as the strengthening of peaceful and inclusive societies. These materials will offer students the opportunity to practise their reading comprehension skills while engaging with global issues of ethical, social, and cultural relevance.
