Course Objectives


Learning goalsThe aim of the course is:- to provide students with basic knowledges of languages, civilization, culture and history of the different Germanic peoples in Late Antiquity and Middle Ages; - to analyze the importance and the development of the mutual linguistic and cultural interferences due to the contacts between the Latin Romance civilizations and the Germanic ones; - to study in deep the peculiarity and the development of the different linguistic areas, with focus on the origins of the English language and the German language; - to provide students with basic means for comprehension and for linguistic and philological analysis of a text. Expected learning outcomesKnowledges and understandigs:At the end of the foundamental course the students will be able:• to recognize the peculiar linguistic features of the Germanic languages;• to understand the phonetic, morphological and lexical structures of the old Germanic languages and their evolution in the modern Germanic languages (English and German);• to understand the mutual linguistic interferences between Romance languages and Germanic languages in a diachronic perspective; • to know basic notions on history, law, society and culture of the Germanic peoples, with focus on that peoples and languages from which English and German came from. • to know the beginnings of medieval literature in the Germanic languages (Gothic, Old English, Old High German, Old Saxon, Old Frisian, Old Norse);• to understand the translation process from Latin to Germanic vernacular languages;

Course Prerequisites


Prerequisites in specific other disciplines are not required, however students should have knowledge of: - fundamentals of articulatory phonetics: to be able to recognize and pronounce the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols;- fundamentals of at least one Germanic language (English or German)- Notions of European History and Geography

Lectures.Some additional hours are scheduled for exercises, in-depth analysis, seminars, conferences

Assessment Methods


The assessment includes an online written test and an oral exam. Passing the written test is a prerequisite for access to the oral exam.Goals of the assessment: The assessment aims to ascertain that the student has acquired a good awareness of the historical and cultural context in which the Old Germanic languages are placed, a basic knowledge of the historical-comparative method applied to the Germanic area, the knowledge of the main phonological and morphological characteristics common to the Old Germanic languages.Written test – The written test takes place in the classroom. It consists of "open" questions. The student will have to demonstrate an adequate knowledge of the topics covered in the section of the course dedicated to Germanic linguistics (p.es. Classification of Old Germanic Languages, Innovations of Germanic). The evaluation of the written test is expressed through a judgment of suitability.Oral exam: The oral exam is structured in a discussion of the written test and an interview concerning the historical-cultural context and the characteristics of the ancient Germanic languages.Attribution of the score: The score is awarded using a mark expressed in thirtieths. The determination of the final grade takes into account the quality of the written and oral tests. In both cases, the following will be evaluated: the correctness of the procedures applied to solve specific linguistic problems, the ability to use technical language competently, and the ability to present data and arguments in a clear, systematic and concise way.A grade of not less than 18/30 must be obtained to pass the exam.To obtain a grade between 18/30 and 24/30, one must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the course topics and an ability to present them correctly in written and oral form.To obtain a grade higher than between 25/30 and 27/30, it is necessary to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the topics covered by the course anda good ability to explain them clearly in written and oral form, using technical terminology appropriately.To obtain a score between 28/30 and 30/30 laude, it is necessary to demonstrate an excellent knowledge of the topics covered during the course, an excellent ability to give solutions to linguistic and textual problems in written and oral form, and a full command of technical terminology.
