Syllabus

Course Objectives


The subject seeks to provide basic knowedge related to the field of second language teaching, with specific reference to methods, levels, approaches, techniques, abilities, competencies for learning and teaching foreign languages in any educational context. The topics will include the nature of languages and of language learning, the methods and techniques involved in language teaching, the use of corpora and other digital tools for the development of teaching materials.


EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course aims at providing the theoretical and methodological tools that are useful for the profession of foreign language teacher, with specific reference to the guidelines of the Council of Europe. Furthermore, it aims to provide the foundational methodological skills to analyse and develop innovative teaching materials.



KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND

Knowledge of the main approaches, methods and techniques in second language teaching, also with reference to CALL (Computer assisted language teaching); knowledge of resources, methods and techniques for the development of teaching materials, also with the use of corpora.



ABILITY OF APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Ability to analyse teaching materials on the basis of the teaching approach and method; knowing and being able to use certain CALL tools; being able to analyse and develop pedagogical materials for second language teaching.



AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT

To be able to reflect critically on the different teaching approaches and methods and on certain digital tools for CALL; to be able to assess the quality of teaching materials developed with corpora.



COMMUNICATIVE ABILITIES

To be able to descrive the main teaching approaches considered throughout the course, also in consideration of the European guidelines; to be able to describe and sustain with relevant argument the methodological choices made during the development of teaching materials with corpora and other digital tools.

Basic concepts of General Linguistics.

Lectures, practical sessions, seminars.

Assessment Methods


Learning assessment will take place through a written exam, which will constitute a prerequisite for admission to the oral exam. Unless otherwise indicated, both exams will take place on the same day and will be assessed with a score out of 30. The exam aims at evaluating the students' preparation on the content of the course, both on the theoretical and on the methodological and practical level. The comment on the practical sessions will be integral part of the evaluation.
