Contents

The course provides an overview of Russian literature in the second half of the 19th century and focuses on its main developments with reference to the historical, philosophical, and cultural context of the period. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between literature and historical and social developments.
During the course, the main schools of thought and cultural movements that characterised this period will be presented, from the debate between Slavophilism and Westernism to the formation and evolution of literary criticism, nihilism and populism.
Through the study of the artistic biographies of I.S. Turgenev, F.M. Dostoevsky, L.N. Tolstoy and A.P. Chekhov, we will observe the evolution of Russian fiction in the second half of the 19th century, highlighting the progressive transformation of the novel and short prose genres, from social and ideological realism to ethical-philosophical reflection, up to the forms of late 19th-century prose.
When possible, the course will require reading in the original language and guided analysis of short passages, contextualised in Italian.
