Course Objectives

This course contributes to the achievement of the educational objective of the Course of Study of Foreign Language and Literature, by providing students with the necessary lexical and grammatical knowledge of Chinese Language, corresponding to level A2/B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Furthermore, it aims at orienting students in acquiring theoretical and episthemological knowledge regarding different modes and forms of translation, by giving them the tools and methods required to translate simple literary texts (folk tales, popular stories and anecdots) from modern Chinese into Italian.

Course Prerequisites

The course is suitable for students who have acquired the written and oral competence expected after attending the Chinese Language First Year Course.

Teaching Methods

Classes (54 hours in total) including mid-term tests (students are required to translate sentences and short passages from Italian into Chinese and viceversa). Homework (sentence translation and grammar exercises) will be corrected and discussed in class.

Assessment Methods

- Mid-term tests (translating sentences and short texts from Italian into Chinese and vicecersa, grammar exercises).
- Final written and oral exams. The written exam, of a two hours duration, consists in translating sentences from Italian into Chinese and translating a short text from Chinese into Italian (the use of dictionaries is not permitted). The oral exam consists in reading, translating and analysing (from a morpho-syntactic perspective) texts in both simplified and non-simplified characters (previously explained in class). In order to be admitted to the oral examination, students must have passed the written one. The final result, at the end of the oral exam, is expressed with a 30-point scale (passing: 18 to 30 cum laude).
