Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to: Knowledge - Describe the theoretical foundations of organizational design - Understand the main structural and cultural variables of organizations - Identify the environmental, inter-organizational and technological dynamics that influence organizational structures Skills - Apply analytical tools for the design of organizational structures - Analyze structural dysfunctions and propose operational solutions - Integrate control and coordination mechanisms effectively Autonomy of judgment - Evaluate alternative organizational models from a sustainability perspective - Connect interdisciplinary knowledge to interpret complex organizational phenomena Communication skills - Use the technical language of the discipline appropriately - Communicate organizational strategies and solutions effectively to diverse audiences Learning abilities - Independently acquire new knowledge about organizational theories and tools - Reflect critically on the evolution of organizational forms in dynamic contexts

Course Prerequisites

No formal prerequisites are required. However, it is recommended that students have prior knowledge of key strategic and managerial topics in business, including: - Analysis of the competitive environment - Business strategies and their implementation - Tools for managing industrial and service enterprises

Teaching Methods

The course includes 72 hours of lessons divided into 3 weekly lessons. The organization of the course is carried out in modules whose lessons will be organized with the following teaching methodologies: lectures, exercises, analysis of case studies, development of group projects. Attendance is strongly recommended.

Assessment Methods

The final grade is expressed in thirtieths and aims to assess the achievement of the expected learning outcomes, in accordance with the Dublin Descriptors. Assessment methods differ for attending and non-attending students. **Attending students Final evaluation is structured as follows: - Individual written exam (75%): multiple-choice and open-ended questions, including those based on business cases discussed in class. - In-class discussion of a business case (25%). Optional activities: - Workshop activity: allows students to earn up to 3 additional points on the final grade. - Optional oral exam: may modify the proposed grade by ±3 points, evaluating: communication skills and clarity of expression; mastery of both technical and general language; interpretation and analysis of organizational issues. **Non-attending students Final evaluation: Individual written exam (100%): multiple-choice and open-ended questions, also based on the business cases included in the textbook. Optional oral exam: may modify the proposed grade by ±3 points, based on the same criteria. Business cases included in the exam: Virgin Active, Ferrero, Zalando, Zara, Unicoop, LinkedIn, Gucci, Sephora, Nokia, Ikea, Philips, Reale Mutua

Reference textbook: Daft, R.L. (latest edition). Organization Theory and Design. Apogeo. Supplementary materials (slides, business cases, articles) will be provided via the e-learning platform.

The course introduces the fundamentals of organization theory, focusing on organizational design, strategic objectives, environmental interaction, and process management. It explores internal design, structural components, inter-organizational dynamics, and the challenges posed by digitalization and internationalization.
