Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the basic geological skills needed to understand and interpret terrestrial climate changes and to insert them into a terrestrial evolutionary perspective and recognize them in the geological record. The aim of the course is to provide students with the fundamental concepts used in geological sciences to understand and explain present and past climate change with a geological perspective and interpretation. In general, the course aims to provide a set of basic knowledge relating to the main events present in the geological record that have directly and indirectly influenced the climate during the evolutionary history of the Earth.

Teaching Methods

Lectures complemented by practical exercises and in-class study based on materials provided by the professor, carried out individually and/or in groups; analysis of case studies; optional field activities (or equivalent activities based) to link observations and processes. The organization of activities (timing, order of topics, individual/group format, and case studies) is indicative and may be adjusted during the course for didactic and organizational needs; any changes will be communicated through the official course channels (email).

Assessment Methods

Final assessment (written) aimed at verifying students’ understanding of the concepts, including through exercises/case studies. Any in-course tests and/or assignments (individual or group) may contribute to the final grade; format and schedule will be communicated through the official course channels.

Texts

Material provided by the professor.

Contents

At the end of the course, the student is able to evaluate the scientific basis of the Earth's past climate system, identify the main geological and climatic events that are present in the Earth's geological record, with the aim of acquiring a long-term vision and better understanding the current global warming trend. Knowledge based on the recognition of the past natural climate variability contained in the geological record is crucial to address the scientific, social and climatic challenges of the near future. The course will address the main events that have characterized the geological record with a strong impact on the climate, showing the extreme climatic variability over time.

More information

This syllabus defines the course learning objectives, expected competencies, assessment methods, and overarching content areas. For didactic and organizational reasons, the professor may make changes to the order of topics, the time allocated to individual modules, the examples and case studies used, and the operational format of certain activities (including fieldwork). Any changes will be communicated in a timely and traceable manner through the official course channels (e.g., email).
