Course Objectives


At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

Understand the structural behavior of existing buildings, with particular reference to historic ones
Identify the main damage mechanisms and sources of vulnerability
Assess structural safety using both qualitative and quantitative approaches
Design strengthening interventions compatible with the historical and architectural value
Select appropriate strengthening techniques and materials
Integrate structural, regulatory, and conservation aspects

Contents


The course covers the principles, techniques, and methodologies for the strengthening and upgrading of existing structures, with particular attention to historic and cultural built heritage. The following topics will be addressed:

Diagnosis and safety assessment of existing structures
Damage mechanisms and material degradation in traditional materials (masonry, timber, steel)
Traditional and innovative strengthening techniques
Interventions on masonry, timber, and steel structures
Strengthening with composite materials (FRP, FRCM, CRM)
Seismic upgrading and retrofitting
Compatibility, reversibility, and minimum intervention in historic heritage
Regulatory framework (NTC, Eurocodes, guidelines for cultural heritage)

The course is part of the international Cultural Heritage curriculum and places particular emphasis on the integration of structural engineering and heritage conservation.
Real-world examples will be used, with reference to both the Italian and European context.
