Course Objectives

Starting from the fundamentals of Structural Design that the students acquired during the first level degree and from those of Technical Physics acquired in the Module 1 of this course (“Renewable Resources for Building”), the present teaching module aims to provide the students with advanced knowledge on the structural design of nearly Zero Energy Buildings (hence the acronym nZEB) with particular reference to the materials and construction systems most suitable for guaranteeing the energy performance required by the current legislation, as well as the analysis, verification and safety assessment of these buildings with respect to ordinary and non-ordinary actions. The specific educational objectives of the course can be summarized in the following points: - Characterize the education of students with advanced knowledge and analysis tools that will allow them to independently tackle the structural design of nZEB buildings; - Develop an integrated and holistic understanding of the project; - Encourage the mastery of the technical terminology of the subject; - Develop skills besides knowledge through practical activities. At the end of the course, the student will have an in-depth knowledge related to: - the physical, thermal and mechanical characteristics of the main building materials used in the design of nZEB buildings; - the technologies and functional layers for the energy-saving building envelope; - the main Italian and European directives and technical regulations on the design of nZEB buildings; - the criteria and methods for the design, calculation and verification of the load-bearing system of nZEB buildings made of solid timber, laminated timber and CLT. At the end of the course the student will be able to: - conceive the structural design of an nZEB building at different scales (material and structure); - dimension, model, analyse and verify timber structures made up of one-dimensional or planar elements, subject to normal or exceptional actions; - read and interpret the reference legislation and directives concerning the design of nZEB buildings; - get autonomously updated on the covered topics.

Course Prerequisites

The knowledge and the skills acquired in the courses of Structural Design, Technical Physics and Sustainable Building Design are essential.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is organized into lectures and practical exercises. The lessons will cover the theoretical aspects of the subject and will serve to correctly address the practical activities required to the student. The exercises will range from simple applicative examples, aimed at clarifying the theoretical topics covered in the class, to the progressive execution of a more complex design project having as its object the analysis and verification of a nearly zero energy building with a timber load-bearing system. The activity required to the student consists in the study of the topics covered by the course program, based mainly on the recommended bibliography and possibly on other reference texts, in the execution of the assigned project and in the preparation for the final exam. The delivery of the project work by the end of the course is an indispensable requirement to be admitted to the exam.

Assessment Methods

Learning verification methods will take place systematically through: - instant polls and evaluation tests of the acquired knowledge at the end of each topic; - regular reviews of the assigned project; - final exam. The final exam aims to ascertain the acquisition of the knowledge and skills expected by the student. To be admitted, it is necessary to submit the project work carried out under the supervision of the professor during the class period. The final exam includes an oral interview lasting about 30-45 minutes divided into two main phases: a first phase in which the student will have to present and discuss the project work in detail, and a second phase in which the student will be asked to answer three out of a maximum of five questions relating to the fundamental thematic areas of the course. For each question, the committee will evaluate the candidate's ability to present the topics being tested in a clear, complete and technical manner, as well as the student's reasoning and problem-solving skills and his degree of in-depth study of the subject. The final grade for this teaching module, expressed out of thirty, will be assigned according to the following proportion: - 60% for the design project; - 40% for the final oral exam. The final grade for the Integrated Course will be the average of the grades that each student has received in the two modules.

Texts

Essential bibliography: - Lecture notes. - NTC 2018 and Circolare 2019. Recommended bibliography: - EN 1995 (part 1-1 e part 1-2). - Piazza M., Tomasi R., Modena R., Strutture in legno - Materiale, calcolo e progetto secondo le nuove normative europee, Hoepli, 2005. - Arieti F., Progettare edifici a energia zero, II ed., Maggioli Editore, 2021.
Additional textbooks and bibliographic materials will be suggested during the course, depending on the in-depth study of the covered topics.
