Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

Analyze and manage the main parameters involved in the conduct of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in complex clinical conditions, with particular reference to the control of flow, pressure, temperature, and metabolic parameters.

Apply the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics during CPB, assessing the impact of extracorporeal circulation on the effectiveness and distribution of the main drugs used in cardiac surgery.

Interpret and manage the main pathophysiological processes associated with CPB, including the systemic inflammatory response and coagulation alterations, through appropriate monitoring and intervention strategies.

Apply patient blood management (PBM) strategies and blood conservation techniques during procedures involving extracorporeal circulation.

Describe and recognize the main perfusion techniques used in thoracic aortic surgery, intraoperative neuromonitoring systems, the potential complications of CPB, and the main forms of mechanical circulatory support (ECMO, Impella, LVAD), with an introduction to the specific aspects of pediatric perfusion.

Course Prerequisites

The student must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to profitably follow the teaching. Therefore the student must have taken the exams following their propaedeutic nature (as per the regulation).

Teaching Methods

The course will consist of lectures.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists of an oral exam and possibly a partial written test.

Texts

The student will be provided with slides relating to the lessons, accompanied by articles and reviews of the literature relating to the topics covered.

Contents

The teaching focuses on the pathophysiological aspects of using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).

Course Language

Italian.
