Course Objectives

GENERAL TARGET

At the end of the course students should be able:
To use epidemiological and bio-statistical tools for a better understanding of biomedical information and for improving medical decision making.

INTERMEDIATE TARGETS
At the end of the course students should be able to:
a) establish an explicit relationship between the evidence-based approach to medicine (EBM), clinical decision theory (MDM) and the process of continuous improvement of the quality of health practice (CQI) b) to proceed in finding the main evidences (from MedLine, Cochrane Library and from the Guidelines) and to use them for an evaluation and critical application in the practical activity; c) to plan decision trees by applying concepts and methods of decision theory applied to clinical decision making

Autonomy of Judgement: At the end of the course students should be able to reading articles related to topics related to the CdS with significant content of biostatistics.

Communication skills: At the end of the course students should be able to use the technical language of medical statistics

Course Prerequisites

The proposed program will also allow students who have not previously matured
Disciplinary knowledge to achieve the training objectives indicated. There are therefore no prerequisites, but we recommend a knowledge of the basic notions of biostatistics

Teaching Methods

The teaching is structured in 48 hours of frontal didactics, each lesson will be divided into two parts. A first part in which will be presented the topic of the lesson and in a second part in which will be proposed by the teacher of the exercises that allow to verify the practical application of the topics treated in a theoretical way.

Assessment Methods

The verification of the preparation of the students will be done by written examination composed of multiple answer questions and/or exercises that allow to verify the practical application of the subjects covered. The total points (30) will be divided on the basis of the questions present on the task and reported on the text in relation to each individual test question. There is no oral test.
The duration of the test is 30 minutes.
The teaching methodology and the methods of verification will be presented by the teacher at the beginning of the course.

The aim of the course is: a) to show how medical statistics and clinical epidemiology, supporting the Evidence Based Medicine - EBM - approach can be applyed to clinical practice; b) to show how these information can be used to plan and implement clinical decision strategies based on decision theory; c) to learn how an integrated approach, asking for different skills and in a multidisciplinary team can be succesfully applied, having a common culture, terminology and a conceptual framework
