Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (01/03/2026 - 15/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the student should have acquired the following skills:
- Understanding of the mechanisms concerning chemical equilibria and handling of multiple equilibria in aqueous solution.
- Knowledge of the chemical behaviour of the main cations and anions.
- Ability to develop a protocol for the separation and identification of simple mixtures of inorganic compounds.
- Knowledge of the chemical, pharmacological and toxicological role of the main cations and anions.
- Learning of the main laboratory operations through practical exercises.
- Knowledge of the main safety regulations that apply to laboratory activities.

Course Prerequisites

A full understanding of the topics covered in the course requires a solid foundation in General and Inorganic Chemistry. Students are therefore urged to pass this examination before the start of the course.
The examination can only be taken after passing the Analytical Chemistry examination.

Teaching Methods

The course is divided into 32 hours of lectures and 24 hours of practical laboratory sessions. The lectures cover the theoretical aspects of the analysis of pharmaceutically relevant inorganic compounds.
The individual laboratory sessions allow the student to deal with laboratory practice and to carry out the analyses explained in the taught sessions.

Assessment Methods

The final test consists of a 30-40 minute oral examination designed to test understanding of general concepts of separation and analysis of inorganic compounds in water solution, through solving exercises.
Gaps in basic knowledge of general chemistry concepts will not be tolerated. The examination will be completed by assessing knowledge of the pharmaceutical and toxicological role of inorganic compounds and instrumental analytical techniques. The result of the laboratory tests will contribute to the final mark.
