Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student must demonstrate:
- to know the molecular structure and organization of proteins;
-to know the structure and function of some main classes of proteins: collagen, serum proteins, respiratory proteins (hemoglobin, myoglobin), immunoglobulins;
- to describe the classification and function of allosteric (or not) enzymes, as well as their regulation by activators and inhibitors, and be in able to calculate its kinetics;
-to know the structure and biological functions of coenzymes and vitamins;
- to know the structure of ATP, the function of this molecule in the metabolism and the processes that lead to the phosphorylation of ADP;
-to know the mechanisms of transport of molecules across the plasma membrane.
-to know the molecular structure and organization of carbohydrates and lipids;
- to understand the general meaning of metabolism;
- to know the interrelationships and the anabolic and catabolic metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins;
-to know the main pathways of hormone-mediated signal transduction;
- to know elements of systematic biochemistry in the main tissues (brain, liver, muscle, adipose tissue, bone tissue) and the regulation of organ metabolism by hormones.
Communication skills: at the end of the course, the student must be able to use the technical language of Biochemistry in the cultural and scientific context of competence.

Course Prerequisites

The main prerequisites are the knowledge of the basics of mathematics and physics for the understanding of mathematical functions and for the relative graphic interpretation of them; Knowledge of the basics of organic chemistry: organic compounds; main organic functions and relative chemical reactivity;
Pre-requisites: Organic Chemistry I

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons;

Assessment Methods

Oral examination: questions related to the treatment of several topics in
which the interpretation of various types of graphs and representation of
chemical structures of biomolecules involved in metabolic pathways is
required.
