Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course pursues the general objective of the degree course to provide knowledge and skills regarding the administrative and managerial function of private companies operating in different sectors. The course aims to provide students with the most suitable tools for the analysis of certain decision-making and management problems that in the company are inevitably treated under uncertainty and that therefore find in the statistical methods an indispensable and scientifically rigorous support for their solution. At the end of the course the student must possess knowledge and skills related to statistical terminology, the theoretical and applicative aspects of basic statistics in both descriptive and inferential fields. The content of the course is integrated with the educational objectives of the entire degree course of study which are the acquisition of essential skills to carry out operational functions within the company at managerial and external consulting level. The acquired knowledge can be applied in all types of companies (commercial, industrial and services). To this end the course aims to transmit the following skills and knowledge:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY
At the end of this course, students should be able to
- recognize and to distinguish the different types of data, univariate and bivariate
- know the frequency distributions and the main descriptive statistical indices (summary, form and variability)
- know the contingency table and the bivariate dependence analysis both for qualitative and quantitative variables
- know the rules that underlie the probability calculus
- know the main probabilistic models as the binomial random variable and Normal random variable
- know and understand the logic for building sample distributions and the implications for statistical inference
- know and understands the scientific philosophy and principles of hypothesis testing
To this end the course proposes to transmit the following skills and knowledge in terms of particular objectives:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (applied)-
At the end of this course, students should be able to
- summarize a set of data using indexes, frequency distributions, tables and graphs- measure by means of an analysis of the dependence the intensity of the relationship existing between the characters being studied- applies estimation methods on sample data to make inferences about population parameters;
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT:
At the end of this course, students
- independently decide which tools to use and which analyzes to carry out to describe synthetically the characteristics of a population
- independently decide which tools to use and which analysis to perform in order to make inference on parameters of the population of interest on the basis of available sample data
- understand, interpret and provide a critical evaluation of both descriptive and inferential data analysis results
- express analytical and summary considerations on the fundamental principles of the discipline and makes interdisciplinary connections.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
At the end of this course, students
- use statistical language in an appropriate and relevant way;
- communicate the results of the statistical analyzes and the logical reasoning both in written and oral form.
ABILITY TO LEARN
At the end of this course, students
- carry out individual and group research on specific aspects of the discipline (tools used: notes, in-depth texts, group exercises)

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons and exercises.

Assessment Methods

The learning assessment procedures consist of two parts: an oral exam, made of exercises and theoretical questions (open questions) on topics that cover the entire program of the course (descriptive statistics, probability and inference calculation); application of the Statistical methodologies using the R software. Students will have to demonstrate that they are able to formalize a problem in quantitative terms, to obtain the appropriate indices and statistics for its solution and to provide an interpretation of the results obtained. During the exam the student can bring a calculator, the statistical tables and the formulary that can be downloaded from the course website.

Contents

Basic methods of descriptive statistics: concepts of average, variability and association between characters. Introduction to the fundamentals of probability calculus, to the concept of random variable in order to lay the foundations for sampling and statistical inference.
