Course Objectives

In line with the educational objectives of the Degree Course (CdS), this module aims to provide technical training (programming and software) to extract information from data and communicate it effectively through graphical visualizations.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
introduction to the R programming language;
knowledge of the R statistical environment for data description and visualization;
basic principles of graph design;
basic principles of data visualization.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
By the end of the course, students will have acquired the following skills:
R scripting to import, clean, and transform data before analysis;
R scripting for data processing and graph creation;
creation of statistical reports and effective presentation of results.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
By the end of the course, students will have:
acquired the correct statistical terminology to describe and discuss the results obtained;
learned to use tools to present their work.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
By the end of the course, students will have the ability to:
select the appropriate tool in various application contexts, for example, choosing the type of graph based on the nature of the data;
critically interpret the results obtained, recognizing limitations and strengths.

LEARNING SKILLS
By the end of the course, students will be able to learn independently, knowing how to search for and use new libraries in R and experiment with new tools and techniques for data analysis and visualization.

Course Prerequisites

Teaching Methods

Lectures and laboratory activities using statistical software

Assessment Methods

The assessment method involves the completion of a project by the student, requiring the practical application of the skills acquired during the course. Using R, the student will need to: collect and prepare the data for analysis; create a final report that includes descriptive analyses and graphical visualizations. In the final evaluation, the following will be assessed: the quality of data preparation, the adequacy and effectiveness of the summary tools and graphical representations used, and the ability to communicate effectively using appropriate statistical language.

Texts

R for Data Science, Hadley Wickman & Garrett Grolemund, O'Reilly (https://it.r4ds.hadley.nz/index.html)

Contents

The Data Processing and Visualization in R module aims to provide students with the necessary skills to create effective and intuitive statistical reports and graphical visualizations using the R programming language. Through a combination of theoretical lessons and laboratory activities, students will learn to extract information from data.
