Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of this course the student should have become familiar with the basic notions and concepts of classical physics, logic and mathematics for various applications. In particular, he/she:
-has become familiar with the laws of physics regulating the behavior and evolution of macroscopic systems, with the classical physics method, based on dialectics between theory and experiment.
-knows basic aspects of mathematical analysis.
-is able to perform a correct and rigorous logical-deductive reasoning.
- has manual calculation skills related to the topics in the program and is able to interpret graphs and formulas.
-has acquired the ability to solve simple problems in classical physics, i.e. calculating physical quantities related to a system or predicting the evolution of a system.

Course Prerequisites

A medium preparation at secondary school level in mathematics is required. In particular the student should know algebraic expressions and should be able to solve equations and inequalities of first and second degrees.

Teaching Methods

The chosen teaching approach places particular attention on the analysis of reasoning processes that lead to the understanding of the mathematical formulation of physical laws, in order to overcome and facilitate the memorization of contents.
The course is structured in 80 hours of frontal teaching, divided into 2 hours lessons according to the academic calendar. Frontal teaching consists of theoretical lessons and examples of practical applications.
During the course, optional 12 hours of exercises are provided.

Assessment Methods

The student preparation will be verified with a written test and an oral exam.

The written test lasts 2,5 hours and consists of 10 exercises. It aims to verify the logical-deductive reasoning and calculation skills developed by the student and the ability to solve simple problems in classical physics.
The written and oral parts will be carried out on different days, to allow the teacher to evaluate the written test with a score between 0 and 30. It is possible to take the oral part having obtained at least 15 points to the written one.

The oral exam aims to verify the knowledge and understanding of arguments covered during the course and present in the program. The oral part can add up to 6 points to the written one.
