Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (01/03/2026 - 15/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The Organic Chemistry course aims to provide students with a solid foundational knowledge of the structure and reactivity of organic compounds.
The course encourages and develops the ability to tackle problems related to the design and synthesis of organic molecules. Connections with biochemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry are emphasized with particular attention.

Course Prerequisites

Students are expected to have acquired basic knowledge of General and Inorganic Chemistry.

Teaching Methods

The course includes 52 hours of in-class instruction (40 hours of lectures and 12 hours of exercises).
The exercises will partly be carried out on the board by the instructor, and partly will require the active participation of the students.

Assessment Methods

Two midterm exams are scheduled. Students who pass both midterms are exempt from taking the final comprehensive exam. Both the midterm exams and the final exam consist of a written test lasting 120 minutes. The written test includes 6 open-ended questions covering both theoretical content and exercises spanning the entire course syllabus. The value of each exercise ranges from 5 to 8 points, depending on the level of difficulty. The maximum score achievable is 33. If the score is 32 or higher, honors (cum laude) will be awarded. An oral exam may be requested either by the instructor or the student, and it serves as an additional assessment component. In such cases, the final grade will be determined based on the results of both the written and the oral exams. It is important to note that the oral exam is not intended solely as a means to raise the grade obtained in the written test; if the oral performance is unsatisfactory, the final grade may be lowered, including the possibility of failing the exam. During the exam, consultation of books, notes, or any electronic devices is strictly prohibited.

Contents

The main goal of the course is to provide students with a solid foundational understanding of the structure and reactivity of major classes of organic compounds, from hydrocarbons to nucleic acids.
By the end of the course, students will be able to correctly name and represent the structure of organic compounds, identify functional groups, and understand the concepts of structural isomerism, regioisomerism, and stereoisomerism.
Students will also be familiar with the fundamental reactions of organic compounds and their mechanisms.
Topics at the interface with biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, and environmental chemistry are highlighted and discussed with particular emphasis.

Course Language
