Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of how corporate finance principles are applied in business management. Through presenting key theories in corporate finance, analysing case studies, and solving problems, students will gain insights into the role and responsibilities of a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The primary objective of the course is to assist students in developing their skills and applying acquired knowledge both academically and practically in business management contexts.
Specifically, the course covers methods and tools utilised by CFOs to evaluate the costs and benefits associated with investment and financing decisions. The concepts of value creation and the time value of money are fundamental for comprehending the basic principles underlying the raising and allocation of capital within modern enterprises.
Upon completion of the course, in alignment with the overall objectives of the degree programme, students will be expected to demonstrate the following competencies:
• KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. Students must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental principles underpinning corporate finance.
• ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. Students should be capable of reinterpreting course content in such a way as to apply the acquired knowledge effectively in their subsequent university studies and future professional careers.
• INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT. Students must be able to gather data and information provided during lectures to integrate acquired knowledge and formulate informed judgements.

Teaching Methods

The Course is built on learning by doing logic. In general, each lesson consists of a theoretical part flanked by the presentation of cases and exercises to be solved in the classroom. Students, properly guided by the teacher, and involved in dialogue teaching rank as the protagonists of the lesson. The active participation of students in lessons is essential to promote the success of the learning process.

Assessment Methods

Student assessment will be carried out through the following methods:

Oral examination – The oral exam consists of a structured discussion aimed at evaluating the student’s critical understanding of the main topics covered in the Corporate Finance course. The exam includes open-ended questions and prompts for in-depth commentary on theoretical concepts, financial models, and the analytical tools introduced during the lectures. Particular emphasis will be placed on the student's ability to argue coherently, apply learned models to practical cases, and draw meaningful connections across different areas of corporate finance.

Project work – Group work presentation and discussion during the final session of the course. The project work is worth a maximum of three points, which will be added to the mark awarded for the oral examination.

The final grade will be determined by the sum of the marks obtained in the project work and the oral examination, based on criteria including coherence, completeness, technical proficiency, and argumentative clarity.
